Audition Information and Requirements
There is no audition fee, but there will be a $450 registration fee ($300 for Youth Band and Honor Band) payable upon acceptance into Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts.
You will be asked to perform a solo from the NYSSMA manual (or equivalent) and sight reading (no scales).
Only one audition appointment is required for each performing group, even if you are auditioning on multiple instruments (flute/piccolo, Bb/Eb clarinet, etc.)
All auditions (EXCEPT Vocal Jazz) will take place at East Meadow High School:

Youth Band rehearsals are Thursday evenings (7:00pm-8:30pm).
All other rehearsals are Saturday mornings (9:00am-11:30am or 9:00am-12:00pm).

REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 5-12 (as of Fall of Next School Year)
- Youth Band:
- Student must be in the 5th or 6th grade
- Student will play a chromatic scale in at least one octave
- Student should prepare either a piece from the NYSSMA Manual (recommended), an etude from a method book, or a piece from their school band music. *Etude or band music should be selected to best demonstrate the student's ability level.
- Sight reading material will be provided at the audition
- Honor Band:
- Student must be in the 7th or 8th grade
- Concert Band:
- Grades 8-12
- NYSSMA Levels 4-6
- Wind Symphony:
- Grades 9-12
- NYSSMA Level 6
- Instrumental Jazz:
- NYSSMA Level: 5 and 6
- Improvisation: Optional but strongly suggested
- Vocal Jazz:
- Percussion:
- Snare Drum:
- Perform orchestra-style roll pp-ff-pp
- Perform 3 rudiments of choice (refer to NYSSMA manual)
- Solo and Sightreading
- You may be asked to demonstrate basic skills on tambourine (with head), triangle, and hand cymbals
- Demonstrate ability on mallet percussion and timpani (if any... see below)
- Timpani:
- Perform roll pp-ff-pp
- Demonstrate pitch awareness through pitch matching
- Solo and Sightreading
- Mallet Percussion:
- Major Scales
- Solo and Sightreading
- Demonstrate ability to play with four mallets
